ARTIFACT

This bag is woven from the ends of vintage kimono silk, the remnants left after a garment was cut, too small to become anything on their own, gathered instead into weft. A discarded gingham cotton shirt runs through it too, its checked pattern breaking up the silk's shine. And tucked into the weave, left in on purpose, are fragments of the paper tag that once described the silk in Japanese, a small, untranslated trace of where this material started, visible if you look closely.

Nothing here was made to be discarded.

It was only waiting to be gathered.

Sakiori is old thrift, given a new discipline.

Long before "sustainable" was a word anyone needed, Japanese weavers were tearing worn cloth, kimono silk gone soft with wear, cotton past its first life, into narrow strips and weaving them back into something whole.

Nothing was wasted because nothing could be.

The technique carries that memory in its name: saki, to tear; ori, to weave.
